Canada’s sad disgrace and being lucky to be a new York sports fan

Watching the riots that happened in vancouver last night after the bruins beat the Canucks to win the Stanley cup made me very sad for the people who live there and had no part in those actions because those acts served only to embarrass that city, the province and the country in which it’s located in. Sadly, it only takes a mischievous few to sully the whole and that’s what occurred here as well as many other random acts of violence surrounding sporting events, including a similar, if not more violent, riots that occurred in Vancouver after the Canucks lost to the new york rangers for that very same stanley cup in 1994.

(Full disclosure: I live in new york and was very happy when the rangers won in ‘94!)

Being a new yorker for my entire life, I’m proud to say that I’ve never had to see a violent display of emotion from fans whenever a local team has lost or even won a championship. In fact, I’ve been very surprised to see how peaceful fans in new york have been over championship defeats or victories. But after last night, I believe that more cities would be better off celebrating sports titles like new york so that we could eliminate the bad behavior we see when fans react to losses by their favorite teams in championship situations.
